Congratulations Dr. Smith

School of Criminal Justice professor Dr. Chris Smith is retiring after 30 years at Michigan State University. 

Photo of Dr. Chris SmithDr. Smith joined the School of Criminal Justice in 1994 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 1998. Prior to joining the MSU SCJ, Dr. Smith was a faculty member at the University of Akron and an Instructor at the University of Connecticut-Hartford. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has been repeatedly recognized for his scholarly and teaching efforts, in addition to his record of service to the field and MSU. Dr. Smith has been the recipient of the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award, the MSU College of Social Science Outstanding Teaching Award, and the MSU School of Criminal Justice Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2021, Dr. Smith was inducted into the School of Criminal Justice’s Wall of Fame, receiving the Distinguished Faculty Award. 

Dr. Smith has an extensive publication record, including over 20 books he has authored or co-authored and over 100 journal articles. His primary research interests include judicial policy making, the United States Supreme Court, and constitutional rights in Criminal Justice. 

Dr. Smith’s impact on the School of Criminal Justice is immense and we are grateful for all that he has done for both the School and our community. Congratulations on your retirement, Dr. Smith!
